A 15-year-old schoolgirl is one of two teenagers suspected of attacking the former British ambassador to the U.S. who was set upon at a Tube station.

The 74-year-old is now recovering in hospital with a suspected broken nose and tendon damage from being punched and scratched.

Lady Catherine Meyer said he was going home via Victoria Station on Wednesday afternoon when the attack happened.

His wife said: "He looks awful".

"He looks bad, the CAT scan came back fine, there is no major head injury but his face looks awful, his".

The Times published a picture of Sir Christopher in hospital with a bloodied and swollen face.

British Transport Police said a 16-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl have been arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm.

She added: "I think we really need to stop this, if you can't walk in London because of fear of being attacked brutally".

'They have been released under investigation while enquiries into the incident continue. He is opinionated, and sometimes people have different opinions, but the police told me they believe that it is more likely that they might have wanted to rob him.

Sir Christopher was the longest serving British ambassador to the USA since the Second World War and was in post from 1997 until his retirement in 2003.
