Culex tarsalis is the mosquito that carries the west Nile virus.

A mosquito pool in Windsor-Essex tested positive for West Nile Virus, the first sign of the virus in Windsor-Essex County this year.

People can best protect themselves by using a mosquito repellent containing DEET and by wearing long sleeves and long trousers if going into mosquito-infested areas.

Higher numbers of other mosquito species are being detected in areas that received rainfall over the past two weeks. Mosquitoes are most active at sunrise and sunset.

Most West Nile virus infections in Wisconsin typically occur between June and September, and are transmitted to humans through a mosquito bite.

Most people who contract West Nile will show no symptoms, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Check that door and window screens fit properly and don't have any holes. The public is also encouraged to report any suspected mosquito-breeding sites and/or any mosquito activity.

The health unit says they are continuing to monitor the situation and the larviciding program will continue throughout the summer.
