  • BREAKING: Gas EXPLOSION completely destroys buildings in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, USA

WE Energies spokeswoman Amy Jahns said workers for a private contractor punctured a 4-inch gas main, causing a leak that resulted in the explosion that rained debris around the downtown area and ignited vehicles parked in the area.

No deaths were reported, but Konopacki said buildings would be searched once the flames were out. "I don't think his legacy is going to be forgotten, and I think the spirit that he embodies is essentially the spirit of Sun Prairie, and Sun Prairie's going to get through this as a community".

The firefighters who had gone to check a gas leak battled the blaze, including 34-year-old Cory Barr, a 15-year-veteran and captain at the Sun Prairie Fire Department.

Mahlon Mitchell, president of the state firefighters union, identified the firefighter who died as Sun Prairie Fire Department Capt. Cory Barr, who also owned a tavern that caught fire in the blast called the Barr House.

Multiple videos from the area show that the explosion turned a section of Sun Prairie into a smoldering, burning hazard area. He said he didn't know if anyone else was hurt. Garrison said Barr and his fellow firefighters and police evacuated 115 people before the blast. Evacuations are underway within a half-mile radius. Police said as of 11 a.m. Wednesday, no one had been reported missing.

Help has also poured in to Sun Prairie High School in the form of snacks, water and hefty donations to help the Red Cross assist those who were forced to evacuate their homes. They own a business down the street from the Barr House.

He and wife Abby have twin girls.

"I was right down there and it's a tough job and they do it and they're volunteers - and you just can't say enough for what they do", said Chuck Wagner. Witnesses said the fire broke out after a loud boom Tuesday night shook the community.

"He was very, very proud of Sun Prairie and the community he lived in", DePula said.
