Federer's frosty response to Wimbledon, World Cup scheduling clash

Roger Federer suggested a clash between the World Cup final and the Wimbledon men's singles final may be more of a concern for those in Russian Federation rather than competitors at SW19. 'What will happen next Sunday is Centre Court will be packed for the men's singles final and I'm sure people will be able to follow the World Cup final, ' Lewis told Independent.

Moreover, Lewis said the All England Club would not erect TV screens on the grounds so ticket holders could watch the World Cup, nor will they use the existing oversize screen on Henman Hill behind Court No. 1 for any goal other than tennis.

The concession will enable Wimbledon-going soccer fans to stream the remaining World Cup matches or check on their progress while watching matches, whether via headphones or silenced.

But Federer offered a contrasting view in his media conference following a 6-0 7-5 6-4 fourth-round win over Adrian Mannarino on Monday.

Fans on the grounds of the All-England Club watch the World Cup quarterfinal between England and Sweden on their cellphones.

"Saturday was a fantastic day at the championships".

I was out and about around the grounds and you could tell when England had scored and it was lovely, it was wonderful.

Said Lewis: "We want people to be able to enjoy in this modern era the fact that this is a tennis event but that there is something else very special going on".

"That's how important Wimbledon is to me and to us over here".

"Hopefully England will get through to the final and it will be one of the very special days at Wimbledon".

Lewis said the tournament had learnt its lesson after showing the 1996 European Championship semi-final between England and Germany, which was decided on penalties, on the big screen.

"They'll hear every point, Wow, love-15, 15-30".

It might be a little embarrassing to see a tennis crowd staring comatose at phones, but apparently it's time for the tennis world to admit other sports exists, with Lewis adding: "It's not unheard of for there to be a ripple of applause or a shout when something happens in the football tournament and I am sure everybody will understand if it does".
