Father fights for life and limbs after contracting flesh-eating bacteria in NJ

A New Jersey father is fighting for his life and may lose all of his limbs after he contracted a flesh-eating bacteria. She says hours after he went crabbing near the Maurice River on July 2, his right leg began to swell then quickly got worse. According to NJ.com, doctors say Perez has Vibrio, a flesh-eating bacteria that is often found during warm times of the year in salt water.
But the next day, the lower half of his right leg was in severe pain and swelling. The father is now in the ICU at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, NJ, according to NJ Advance Media. It's in a group commonly known as flesh-eating bacteria.
"He is in critical condition", Perez-Dilan told NJ Advance Media. His forearms are black in color. Anyone with liver disease or a weakened immune system should also avoid eating raw shellfish because the bacteria can also be spread through food.
"He's been praising God nonstop", Perez-Dilan said.
"Typically, when you get an infection like this, it enters through an existing wound and can spread throughout the bloodstream and can cause other complications such as necrotizing fasciitis, which he unfortunately got", said Cumberland County Health Officer Megan Sheppard.
Doctors have put Perez on antibiotics and are waiting to see if responds. Perez-Dilan said one of her father's friends and another family member developed rashes and swelling.
State and county officials have acknowledged that Vibrio bacteria "is not uncommon for the waters" but can not do much aside from advising people to stay out of brackish water, according to NJ Advance Media. He's just happy to have a second chance, ' she said. The bacteria is more risky to those with compromised immune systems, like Perez, who has Parkinson's disease. We think water is safe. They can be found in the ocean regardless of water quality, said Larry Hajna, a spokesman for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
