Fair game? Three suspected poachers eaten by lions on South Africa reserve

  • More than one alleged poacher thought to be killed by lions

A gang of poachers who broke into a South African game reserve to slaughter a herd of rhinos were attacked and eaten by a pride of hungry lions. Investigators found a human head, along with other body parts and limbs, along with three pairs of empty shoes, according to the Daily Mail.

The remains of the bodies were found as darkness fell on Tuesday.

"There seems to be clothing for three people".

At least three hunters are believed to have been devoured by the predators, judging by the bloody scene on the Sibuya Game Reserve near Kenton-on-Sea in Eastern Province, South Africa.

While Fox said they were sad the poachers were killed, "This sends out a very clear message to any other poachers that you will not always be the victor".

An anti-poaching dog alerted its handler around 4:30 a.m. Monday, but the handler brushed off concerns. The handler then heard a commotion from the lions but didn't investigate as there usually is around the early hours.

One day later, one of the reserve's rangers then stumbled upon the remains of the poachers. An investigation will continue. On Wednesday, Sibuya employees and police found the poachers' gear scattered through the thick bushes.

Reserve staff did however find high-powered rifles with silencers, wire cutters and an axe.

Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said: "A riffle and an axe were found at the scene".

"The firearm has been taken by police and will be sent to the ballistics laboratory to establish if it has been used in any other poaching or crimes".

The search party also enlisted the assistance of a helicopter to locate any survivors.

In February a poacher hunting lions in the Umbabat Game Reserve near the Kruger National Park was killed by lions and was identified by his sister in law from his head - the only part of his body left.

The Sibuya reserve is home to rhinos, lions, elephant, buffalo and leopards and is popular with British tourists.

Due to its prominence and collection of animals, the park has faced multiple break-ins by poachers in recent years.

Nine rhinos have been killed with high-caliber hunting rifles at Eastern Cape reserves so far this year.
