Sharif, who was ousted as prime minister a year ago for corruption, was also fined $8m by the National Accountability Bureau court. However, the plea was dismissed and the verdict was announced in their absence.

His daughter, Maryam Sharif, also received a seven-year sentence, while his former security officer Safdar Awan received a one-year sentence. Maryam's husband and PML-N lawmaker Muhammad Safdar was handed a year in jail, he said.

He said that the Avenfield properties would be confiscated by the federation. She called on the nation to stand with her father who had faced similar situations in the past and remained steadfast.

"We were the first petitioners in the Panama case". Khan backs down from lockdown threat. This is a landmark decision.

PML-N officials also accuse the military of using its muscle to twist the arm of the media to restrict coverage of criticism of the judiciary and military by Sharif and his allies. "Even with institutional pressure and this verdict, the party is maintaining its position", he said.

After it came to light that the Sharif family had purchased several lavish apartments in London through offshore companies, Pakistan's Supreme Court found that the disgraced prime minister had failed to properly disclose his financial assets - several of which were "disproportionate to his means of income" - and disqualified him from office.

They had requested the judge for a seven-day exemption, saying they want to be present in the court when the judgment is announced. "This partnership is no ordinary partnership", said the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz supremo while addressing a press conference sitting alongside his daughter Maryam Nawaz, who has been sentenced to a total of eight years in jail.

A Pakistan accountability court on Friday sentenced Sharif to 10 years in prison in one of the three corruption cases against him in the high-profile Panama Papers scandal and fined 8 million pound (USD 10 million). Sharif's two sons, who are British citizens, also ignored the repeated court summons.

Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif vowed on Friday to return to Pakistan after his wife regains consciousness, despite being sentenced in the Avenfield properties case.

The Avenfield case hearing lasted for more than nine months and both Sharif and his daughter attended dozens of hearings.

Sharif was forced to relinquish his leadership position from his party, ending his active involvement in its political affairs.

Mr. Hussain Nawaz admitted ownership of the flats but denied that they were purchased through corruption money.
