Turkey put the new political system to a referendum in 20-17.

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has promised to turn the new executive system in the country into a more efficient government compared to the old system.

Erdogan's critics say the political shift from the old parliamentary system, in which the prime minister was chosen by lawmakers, to the new presidency system will damage the democratic pillars in Turkey.

"As president, I swear upon my honor and integrity, before the great Turkish nation and history, to work with all my power to protect and exalt the glory and honor of the Republic of Turkey", Erdogan told parliament as he took the oath of office. An adviser to Erdogan later said that the governor's term would remain at five years. "With the power granted to us by the new presidential system, we will get quicker and stronger results".

The post of prime minister has been scrapped and the president will now be able to select his own cabinet, regulate ministries and remove civil servants, all without parliamentary approval.

Erdogan, who has transformed Turkey by allowing Islam to play a greater role in public life and boosting the country's worldwide stature, will take his oath nearly two years after defeating a bloody attempted coup. It later showed him visiting Ataturk's mausoleum in the capital, Ankara.

He is expected to announced the members of the cabinet later on Monday. "In other words, Turkey will be an institutionalized autocracy".

Erdogan has been in power for 15 years, first as prime minister, and then as president, from 2014. Erdoĝan has repeatedly clashed with strategic allies such as the USA and the European Union in recent years over the war in Syria, Turkey's accession to the EU, human rights abuses by Ankara, Europe's failure to support Turkey during the coup attempt, and rising Islamophobia in Europe. The lira has also fallen by a fifth in value against the dollar this year. It stood at 4.5570 against the dollar at 1445 GMT.

The AKP lost its single-party parliamentray majority in the 24 June elections, winning 295 seats.

The markets will keep a close eye on economic appointments, keen to see a steady hand at the helm in a fast-growing economy dogged by double-digit inflation and a widening current account deficit.
