EPA chief Pruitt resigns amid ethics scandals

  • Environmental Protection Agency administrator Scott Pruitt listens as President Donald Trump speaks during a cabinet meeting at the White House Thursday

Inhofe expressed his support for his former staffer on Thursday, calling Wheeler "the ideal choice" to serve as acting EPA administrator.

Democratic U.S. Representative Gerry Connolly said after his resignation: "Scott Pruitt's reign of venality is finally over".

In the end, stroking Trump's ego wasn't enough to save Pruitt, but he used his near-spiritual resignation letter as one last expression of reverence for the President.

"I think the most grievous threat that we have today is this imperialistic judiciary, this judicial monarchy that has it wrong on what the First Amendment's about and has an objective to create religious sterility in the public square, which is wholly inconsistent with the Founding Fathers' view", Pruitt warned.

Mink said she hopes her lunchtime interaction with Pruitt "empowers everyone who'd like to speak to their public officials - if you have something to say, say it".

"We deserve to have someone at the EPA who actually does protect our environment, someone who actually does believe in climate change and takes it seriously", Mink told Pruitt. Trump writes on Twitter, "Within the Agency Scott has done an outstanding job". The top White House aide was reportedly "obsessed" with giving him the boot. But Pruitt had also been dogged for months by scandals that spawned more than a dozen federal and congressional investigations.

In them, he noted that Trump gave money to both political parties over the years and said Trump was a successful PR person but not a successful businessman.

On Friday, his final day in office, Pruitt was back at the EPA building in downtown Washington to say goodbye to aides. Pruitt then began booking his own TV appearances, these people said.

He also ordered the installation of a secure telephone cabin in his Washington office at the cost of $43,000, which critics found excessive. The report has not yet been published, officials said. With a slim 51-49 majority, Republicans will have trouble confirming Pruitt's successor prior to the midterms elections in November.

Oklahoma's former Attorney General, Scott Pruitt, is out at the EPA.

"Scott Pruitt's departure is long overdue".

"Wheeler is much smarter and will try to keep his efforts under the radar in implementing Trump's destructive agenda", Jeremy Symons, vice president for political affairs at the Environmental Defense Fund told Politico in May of this year.

The two men also commiserated about the "deep state", along with current and former aides, conspiring against them.

From a policy perspective, Pruitt was one of Trump's most effective Cabinet members. It is extremely hard for me to cease serving you in this role first because I count it a blessing to be serving you in any capacity, but also, because of the transformative work that is occurring.

Until now, Trump had stood by Pruitt - a zealous lieutenant who strongly defended his decision to quit the Paris climate accords - praising his work to roll back Obama-era environmental regulations that the president says hinder economic growth.

After the Trump administration announced Wheeler's nomination to the agency in April, Inhofe hailed Wheeler as a "close friend".

When a new administration takes office, one expects some of its predecessor's priorities to be reexamined.

"It is time for new leadership at the EPA", Stefanik said in a statement. "I am the deputy administrator and that is what I am focused on doing".
