Before resuming the rescue Monday, officials said they hoped to free all the boys by the end of the day, according to ABC News.

United States President Donald Trump wrote Sunday on Twitter: "The U.S.is working very closely with the Government of Thailand to help get all of the children out of the cave and to safety".

The saga has dominated global headlines, with the team spending nine days unaccounted for inside the cave, before British divers found them - emaciated and dishevelled - huddling on a muddy bank above the flooding. On Friday, a former Thai Navy diver who had volunteered to help with the rescue, Saman Gunan, lost consciousness and died on an oxygen supply mission.

CNN was told the boys were exploring the caves on June 23 with their coach when they were trapped inside by heavy seasonal rains.

Reuters reported that eight players have been rescued in unsafe attempts by a world-class global team of divers.

Thailand's Navy SEAL commander says oxygen levels inside have dropped. Tuesday's operation began just after 10am.

A spokesperson from the Thai public health authority said that they were in "high spirits" and also claimed that as they are football players, they have high immune systems.

The boys who were initially rescued asked for basil fried rice, but doctors are instead feeding them soft foods like Congee, a Chinese rice porridge.

Four more of the boys were carried on stretchers out of the labyrinthine Tham Luang cave on the Myanmar border at dusk on Monday, bringing the number to eight, brought out so far after two rescue pushes on successive days.

Somboon Sompiangjai, 38, the father of one of the trapped boys, said parents had been told by rescuers that the "strongest children" would be brought out first.

As we enter the day three of the Thai cave rescue mission, the public health permanent secretary Dr Jesada Chokedamrongsuk, from the Ministry of Public Health and Chiangrai Prachanukroh Hospital, spoke to the media this morning (local time) about the health of the eight boys who have been rescued so far.

Four ambulances and a convoy of other vehicles arrived at the cave site on Tuesday morning as rains hit the region.

Family members have seen at least some of the boys from behind a glass isolation barrier, and Jedsada said doctors may let the boys walk around their beds Tuesday.

Officials will be meeting late Monday to discuss Tuesday's plan.

The second group freed on Monday were aged 12 to 14. But they also warned heavy rain could hamper their efforts. The first rescue mission of the soccer team commenced on Sunday, July 8.

Nargonsak said this phase may take longer than the previous two rescue missions, the longer, first missing taking 11 hours.

He posted video of divers escorting the pod during testing in a Los Angeles swimming pool. All the boys were in good condition, Narongsak said.

Early tests indicate all of the boys could be suffering from lung infections, with full blood test results expected in the next 24 hours.
