Of Boris Johnson, Trump said: "He's a very talented guy, I like him a lot".

The UK-India Joint Trade Review, which also focused on life sciences and information technology, formed the crux of a new UK-India trade partnership announced during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the UK in April for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).

"The United States looks forward to finalizing a great bilateral trade deal" with the U.K., Trump said.

In retrospect, British Prime Minister Theresa May might wonder whether this was really the best week for a visit from Donald Trump.

The president, however, did not back down from the controversial comments he made about immigration in the Sun interview, calling the influx of migrants a "very negative thing for Europe" during Friday's remarks.

According to Politico, the key question is whether May's Tory opponents will try to keep pressure on May or whether they have the numbers and the intention to damage her government in an effort to get the Brexit they feel voters expect.

London Mayor Sadiq Kahn, who gave the go-ahead to fly a giant baby Trump balloon in the city, has defended the protesters. "I don't think we see it as rude. He never enters into adult discussion", said Paul Fonseca, 23.

Trump's remarks to the Sun were the most biting any U.S. president has ever made on visit to Britain. "She wanted to go a different route", he said.

He added: "I think our Prime Minister should have the confidence to speak to the US President on equal terms and it's for President Trump to say what he wants about me; I'm not going to rise to President Trump's views". "And that is fine", he said.

"I predicted Brexit. I was cutting a ribbon for the opening of Turnberry - you know they totally did a whole renovation, it is attractive - the day before the Brexit vote", Trump said.

"I think he has done a bad job on crime, if you look, all of the disgusting things going on there, with all of the crime that is being brought in".

London hopes that the new paper will form the basis for a Political Declaration on future relations that it hopes will accompany the formal withdrawal agreement from the European Union by October.

Concerning Brexit, Trump said, "I would have done it much differently".

The UK is set to leave the European Union on 29th March 2019, more than two years after the referendum that saw 51.9% vote to leave compared to 48.1% who wanted to stay.

May hoped to use the talks to explain her plan for Brexit and to outline the complexities involved.

British politicians rounded on Trump for his intervention, with one minister asking "Where are your manners, Mr President?" and the opposition Labour party calling him "extraordinarily rude".

"The relationship between our two nations is indispensable to the cause of justice and peace", Trump said. While there would be "no tariffs on any goods", the U.K.'s vast services sector will suffer significant disruption.

Downing Street and the White House had attempted some damage control overnight and on Friday morning. Moscow denies the charge, but May is pressing Trump to raise the issue with Putin.

Before heading for Scotland, the president and Queen Elizabeth II became acquainted over tea at Windsor Castle.

He will not attend any high-profile events in London, where the big demonstrations are planned, but would have heard protesters outside the ambassador's residence where he and his wife stayed Thursday.
