Donald Trump claims he warned Vladimir Putin against election meddling

  • Donald Trump thinks intelligent people approve of him

McFaul said the White House, by considering the request, was "assigning moral equivalence between a legitimate indictment of Russian intelligence a cockamamie fantasy (from Moscow) with no basis in reality".

Despite his attempt at damage control over the reaction in Washington, Mr Trump has continued to insist that his meeting with Mr Putin was something to be proud of and has now said that he is anticipating another summit.

U.S. opposition politicians are calling for Donald Trump's interpreter to testify before Congress about his summit talks with Vladimir Putin. In his first public comment on it, Putin on Thursday declared it "successful".

'I'm a low-key, understated guy, but that should not be mistaken for what my spine is made out of.

He also lashed out at Europe and USA -dominated North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, saying Russian Federation would hit back with an "equivalent response" to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation bases near Russia's borders and other "aggressive steps".

"What my work has always been about is allowing people to see differently", Burson said in a video for TIME about the cover. He blames Trump's opponents.

But senior Russian officials described Monday's Trump-Putin summit as going "super" for them.

Russian officials have singled out McFaul, the US ambassador to Russia from 2012-14, and fellow Kremlin critic Bill Browder.

A former U.S. Ambassador to Russia, Michael McFaul, says Putin is obsessed with an imaginary scheme to undermine the Russian government that McFaul supposedly conducted from the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, and McFaul anxious about Trump permitting this whole story to take flight.

Trump assailed US news media accounts of the summit, his first extensive face-to-face meeting with the Russian leader.

The lively debate in Washington is unthinkable in Russian Federation, where Putin has never faced real political opposition and leads a country that has never had a democratic transition of power.

Trump also accused the news media of trying to provoke a confrontation with Moscow that could lead to war, although concerns about the meeting have been raised by a broad cross-section of Republicans and Democrats.

Other Russian officials have for months spoken darkly of plots in America against Trump, echoing the USA leader's own criticisms of the special counsel investigation into Russian election meddling and possible collusion with members of Trump's campaign team as the work of the "deep state". But he said Trump "is not making the problem better, he's making it worse".

Indeed, when Trump came to office, many Russians hoped he would pave the way for lifting sanctions and ending years of tensions.

In rebutting Trump's dismissive comments about U.S. intelligence on Monday, Coats said, "We have been clear in our assessments of Russian meddling in the 2016 election and their ongoing, pervasive efforts to undermine our democracy".

McFaul, ambassador to Russian Federation under Democratic former President Barack Obama and a critic of both Trump and Putin, expressed deep concern that the White House failed to defend him. "If he [Mr Trump] spoke in English, there would be no other way for Congress to know what he said, except to ask the president himself".

However, a new row developed when the U.S. leader appeared to disagree with United States intelligence over whether Russian Federation was still targeting American elections. Russian officials worry that domestic turmoil in the USA will hamper potential future cooperation on Syria or arms control discussed at the summit.

David Frum, former speechwriter for President George W. Bush, says Donald Trump behaves in ways consistent with Vladimir Putin having a hold on him.

Konstantin Kosachev, head of the upper house of parliament's foreign affairs committee, said the idea sets a risky precedent that threats the "the whole idea of diplomacy, " according to Russian news agencies.

The summit saw President Trump spent two hours in private with his Russian counterpart before answering journalists' questions.
