"And, frankly speaking, the idea that we limit the rights to protest, we limit the rights to free speech because it may cause offense to a foreign leader is a very, very slippery slope".

"We are expecting hundreds of thousands of people in London wanting their voices heard because they reject the normalization of a Trump agenda-one that is based around hate and divisiveness", said the Stop Trump Coalition.

"I think that [the British] people like me a lot and agree with me on immigration".

Referring to planned protests in the city on Friday, which will see a blimp flown of the president portrayed as a baby in a nappy, Mr Trump added: "I think [the mayor] has not been hospitable to a government that is very important".

Ms Thornberry said Mr Trump's comments on the PM's Brexit strategy and his suggestion Mr Johnson would be a "great prime minister" were "rudeness upon rudeness upon rudeness".

The British government on Thursday published its long-awaited Brexit blueprint aimed at restarting stalled talks with the European Union, only for it to be panned by eurosceptics, the City of London and the U.S. president.

Asked if the ex-minister could be in No. 10 one day, he replied: "Well I am not pitting one against the other".

The Trumps were greeted in the courtyard of Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire by UK Prime Minister Theresa May and husband Philip for the dinner in the President's honour.

"Maybe they're taking a little bit of a different route [on Brexit], so I don't know if that's what they voted for", he told a press conference after the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels.

In a another swipe, Trump also said he would have done the Brexit negotiations "much differently" and claimed the prime minister did not listen to his advice. "But maybe they're taking a little bit of a different route, so I don't know if that's what they voted for".

"I guess when they put out blimps to make me feel unwelcome, no reason for me to go to London", Mr Trump told the newspaper. "I think he has done a very bad job on terrorism", he said. And that is fine.

May's "business-friendly" Brexit plan - which would keep Britain in a free trade zone for goods with the European Union but mean it has to share some European Union rules - was agreed by her cabinet only last Friday after two years of wrangling since Britons voted to leave the bloc in a 2016 referendum.

It comes after London Mayor Sadiq Khan repeatedly called for the president's visit to the country to be canceled. "I think that's why Brexit happened".

Criticising May for the warm welcome given to the American leader, he said: "Theresa May has invited President Trump to our country at a time when his unsafe and inhumane policies are putting the lives and wellbeing of millions of people at risk".

The First Lady, who is on an official visit with husband Donald Trump, donned a glamorous yellow chiffon cape dress to attend a gala dinner at Blenheim Palace.

Trump will spend the weekend at the former, which he described as a "magical place", before heading to Helsinki, Finland, for a much-anticipated summit on July 16 with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Earlier, British Prime Minister Theresa May invoked wartime leader Winston Churchill and strong transatlantic ties as she hosted Trump Thursday night - hours after he began a protest-laden visit by questioning her Brexit strategy.

The president, who briefly held May's hand as they walked up the stairs to the palace in a repeat of her visit to White House past year, attended the dinner hosted by the British prime minister for over 100 guests, including business leaders from across different sectors.

He said he got along with Theresa May "very well", but suggested he might make time during his United Kingdom visit to speak with his friend Boris Johnson, who has just rocked her Government by resigning as foreign secretary.

The president also took the opportunity to express his "great love for countries in Europe", but claimed that allowing in refugees fleeing conflict and starvation was causing the continent to lose its culture.
