  • CDC Reports 212 Confirmed Cases of Cyclospora in Midwest

The recall on vegetable trays sold at Kwik Trip and other location on June 15 has impacted consumers in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

'The Cyclospora parasite needs time (days to weeks) after being passed in a bowel movement to become infectious for another person, ' the FDA said.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said it's partnering with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state and local agencies to examine 212 confirmed cases of parasite-borne cyclosporiasis. The cases were reported in Iowa, Indiana, Wisconsin and IL. People infected may also experience loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps or pain, nausea, gas and fatigue.

Anyone who ate anything from any of the recalled vegetable and dip trays and developed symptoms of Cyclospora infection should seek medical attention and tell their doctors abut the potential exposure to the parasite.

People who got illness range from ages 13 to 79 years old. Some people who are infected with Cyclospora do not have any symptoms. Therefore, it is unlikely that cyclosporiasis is passed directly from one person to another. Vomiting, body aches, headache, fever, and other flu-like symptoms may also occur. If not treated, the illness may last from a few days to a month or longer.

In a statement, the CDC said seven people had been hospitalized after eating the vegetables, which were sold in 6-, 12- and 28-ounce packages.

The trays being recalled have a "best if used by" date of June 17.

The outbreak was first tracked by the CDC in mid-June, and is most severe in Wisconsin. Two cases were from vegetables bought in another state but consumed in MI. "FDA is now reviewing distribution and supplier information related to the vegetable trays; the investigation is ongoing", according to the FDA's update this week.

The affected products are not believed to be for sale in any of these stores at this time, but may have been purchased by consumers prior to their recall. If you have any of the vegetable trays in your home do not eat them and throw them away.
