Defending Wimbledon champion Federer ousted in quarter-finals

  • Roger Federer prepares to serve against Adrian Mannarino

Federer faces eighth seed Kevin Anderson, who he has not dropped a set against in four previous meetings. "I've been building in the last couple of weeks and my level of tennis is going up", he said.

Yet once he had ended Federer´s run of holding serve for 85 consecutive games - a streak dating back to last year´s semi-final - Anderson´s confidence soared.

Roger Federer has played down the prospect of a clash between the Wimbledon and World Cup finals by joking that football fans in Moscow will be distracted by the tennis.

And, despite his two-set advantage, the 20-times grand slam victor never looked entirely comfortable, despite having never previously lost a set to Anderson in four other meetings.

The women's semi-finals are set for Thursday.

"I just kept telling myself to keep believing, and that today it would be my day".

The Swiss walked off the court after defeat at Wimbledon for the first time in two years but it was in unfamiliar surroundings; SW19 authorities scheduled him on No 1 Court for the first time since his 2015 quarter-final against Gilles Simon. That's the mindset you need against someone like Roger. I had moments where I was great, I felt like I was reading his serve, other moments where I don't know where the hell I was moving to.

Anderson is the first South African man to make the last four at Wimbledon since Kevin Curren in 1983.

"Yeah, of course, the goal is to come back here next year".

He said: "I just asked the chair umpire how did I deserve that warning?"

"Do you think I ruined the court?" he bellowed at Ramos. Nishikori did the same in the fourth set and he didn't get a warning. He's always like a big war for me.

Djokovic had been yearning for a Centre Court date, after playing as many games on Court Two as the main show court beforehand in this tournament.

"That was very important", he added. "I played only once in first four matches on Centre Court. I'm pleased I'll be staying there right now".
