Conservative Party vice chairs Ben Bradley and Maria Caulfield resign over Brexit

  • Can the turmoil keep sterling down?

British Prime Minister Theresa May dug in her heels today after the resignation of two top government ministers over Brexit negotiations whipped up a storm that threatened to topple her fragile minority government. "But remember, what are the options in front of us?"

Theresa May is having a tough time holding her government together.

Among those rallying around May was environment minister Michael Gove - a prominent campaigner to exit the European Union alongside Johnson before the 2016 referendum - who said he would not resign.

Sky News understands that the five business groups have enjoyed weekly meetings with Mr Clark in recent months, but met only once every six weeks with the previous Brexit Secretary, David Davis.

The carefully choreographed meeting last week resulted in a deal May believed her cabinet had signed up to, which would create a "UK-EU free trade area" for goods, governed by a "common rule book".

The former home secretary Amber Rudd accused Mr Johnson of "backseat driving" in the Brexit negotiations in September previous year.

Two Brexit disruptors, two very different resignations.

His dramatic resignation followed those of Davis and his deputy Steve Banker overnight over May's plans to keep Britain economically close to the bloc.

Another two Conservative MPs have just resigned from their roles over Theresa May's plans for Brexit.

Progress is rated using a scale of green amber and red - on the most recent list, there are no problems considered to have enjoyed "green" progress, two that are marked as "amber", and 22 that are rated as red - meaning that the BCC thinks there has been nearly no progress.

Is this the end to the cabinet resignations?

Numerous prime minister's supporters believe she would win a contest and cement her authority; but May would face a leadership challenge if she lost, with Johnson among the potential candidates.

For now, hardline Brexiteers are regrouping; many supported Johnson's resignation, calling it "principled" and honorable. Others have voiced their support for May's premiership and against a future Labour prime minister.

Trump has long voiced his support for Brexit, saying it was part of a global uprising that ultimately thrust him to power, and he was at his Scottish golf resort the day after Britons voted to leave the European Union, saying the outcome was a "great thing". This seemed to be too a hard pill for some of the Brexiteers to swallow, leading them to leave the government. Asked by DailyMail.com whether Mrs May should continue as PM, Mr Trump said "that is up to the people".

Mrs Rudd's public slapdown came after Mr Johnson, who is widely regarded to have ambitions to become prime minister, penned a lengthy article for the Daily Telegraph that laid out his Brexit blueprint.

May's proposals for a "common rulebook" on goods "hands control of large swathes of our economy to the EU", he said.

"I have no idea, Sir Graham Brady has made it very clear that he will not give anybody any indication of how many letters he has received", he said.

"The Government now has a song to sing".
