Coffee linked to lower risk of death

However, the researchers stressed that the study only found an association with coffee and longevity and didn't prove that coffee leads to a longer life.

Blood samples and detailed medical histories, including health and lifestyle questions, showed that 33% of people drank between two and three cups of coffee a day.

For those who drank six to seven cups a day, the risk was cut 16 percent, Loftfield said.

"These results provide further evidence that coffee drinking can be part of a healthy diet and may provide reassurance to those who drink coffee and enjoy it", the authors wrote in the paper.

"Coffee makes you happy, it gives you something to look forward to in the morning", he said. Coffee drinking was inversely associated with all-cause mortality, that is more coffee a person drank less were the risks of that person dying.

In a study by Britain's National Cancer Institute, researchers used health data volunteered by 500,000 participants to conclude that coffee drinkers with an average age of 57 were less likely to die over the preceding 10 years.

Coffee contains more than 1,000 biological compounds, including potassium and folic acid, known to have an effect on the body, Loftfield explained. During the study's 10-year follow-up period, around 14,200 of those people died.

Your habit of guzzling coffee throughout the day could be the secret to a longer life.

Researchers accessed genetic data for 403,816 of the 498,134 study participants to create 2 genetic "caffeine metabolism" scores (CMSG) by "adding the number of alleles of single base changes, or single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), previously associated with blood caffeine metabolite levels, and the map near genes with plausible roles in caffeine metabolism".

That rate dropped to 6% for those who drink less than one cup of coffee daily.

Moreover, to get the benefit, it didn't matter whether someone metabolized caffeine slowly or quickly.

The research did not include whether participants drank coffee black or with cream and sugar.

Still, some doctors warn against starting a coffee habit.

Researchers say this suggests caffeine wasn't responsible, but as the study was observational more research is required to determine what is behind the benefit.

The study covered almost half a million people. There have been however some studies that show that regular coffee intake may not be good for health.

But not only was this a very large study that demonstrated significant findings, it's one of many studies that indicate coffee may be beneficial for health.

Past studies have indicated an inverse association between drinking coffee and the risk of developing chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, Parkinson's and cancers of the liver, bowel, colon and endometrium.
