After months of silence, the UCI said Froome's result did not represent an adverse finding, which could have led him to be stripped of his Vuelta victory, and a suspension.

In recent years Sky's riders have been punched and spat at, while Froome allegedly had a cup of urine thrown at him in 2015 by a spectator who shouted "Doper!" as he passed.

"Of course it has been damaging", he said when asked about his reputation. "As it is right now I'm just happy to draw a line in the sand and move on and focus on bike racing".

Froome won the Giro D'Italia in May while the anti-doping investigation against him was still ongoing and believes he has nothing to fear ahead of the tour, which starts in Noirmoutier-en-l'Île on Saturday. Froome's team director Dave Brailsford said Sky was used to operating in a tense atmosphere and slammed the way the information about the rider's test for Salbutamol was leaked.

"I think they put it out there in the hope that people will under fuel", Porte said.

"This situation has been his worst nightmare but throughout he has maintained his dignity and maintained his performance, winning the Giro and coming here to try to win the double", he said.

"I'm still an asthmatic, that hasn't changed", Froome told Sky Sports News. It's something I've never done before so it's completely unknown to me.

"So it is with a little bit of extra pride that I'm part of this team leading into this Tour".

"It would be insane to say it hasn't been [damaging]", said Froome.

Tour organisers ASO had banned Froome from the race but the World Anti Doping Agency and the International Cycling Union delivered a long-awaited verdict on a September 2017 test of the Briton that cleared his name.

Unlike the team leaders for the other squads, Froome was not interviewed on stage and opted not to stop for the waiting media.

BBC Sport published a large tranche of data released by the team relating to Froome's preparation for the stage, and his refuelling plan and power output during it.

Jul 04 2018 01:59 pm CET UCI's president David Lappartient has made a call to cycling fans that are set to attend the Tour de France to bring an environment free of violence to the race.

I was here in 2011 with Alberto Contador, who crushed it in the Giro and was fifth - which is nothing to sneeze at - but couldn't back it up in the Tour.
