A Facebook group is campaigning to make Green Day's 2004 single "American Idiot" number one in the charts during the time when US President Donald Trump is in the country for a "working visit".

According to the U.K.'s Official Charts, "American Idiot" has re-entered the singles ranking at #18, and sits less than 4,000 copies away from the top 10.

The Washington Post, earlier this week, reported about the current campaign of the band's fanbase in the United Kingdom to bring back "American Idiot" on top of the charts.

Trump is set to meet Prime Minister Theresa May and Queen Elizabeth II during his four-day stay.

The 'Get American Idiot to No.1 for Trump's UK Visit' organisers said they've rallied more than 20,000 supporters because it's "hilarious". Green Day also depicted Trump as an apocalyptic zombie in the 2017 music video for "Back in the USA".

So far the push is working - it is now sitting at number 18 thanks to the help of protesters sharing the #MAIGA (Make American Idiot Great Again) message on social media.

"American Idiot" was originally inspired by American political events that occurred around the time it was released, such as George W. Bush's presidency and the Iraq war. The titular track on the band's 2004 rock opera resonated with a generation of eyeliner-wearing, anti-establishment punks while at the same time playing ad nauseam on auto radios in American suburbia, spending six weeks at No. 1 on Billboard's Top 100.
