Donald Trump has used his first press interview during his visit to the United Kingdom to lay into Theresa May's plans for Brexit and hail Boris Johnson as a future prime minister, as well as continuing his war of words with London mayor Sadiq Khan.

Trump's denial Friday echoed what the White House said late Thursday, when press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders offered this: "The president likes and respects Prime Minister May very much".

-British trade deal and that she had failed to take his advice on how to negotiate with the European Union.

Seated alongside the PM at Chequers, Trump added: "The relationship is very, very strong, we really have a very good relationship".

Thousands of people waving banners and banging pots and pans took to the streets of London on Friday to protest against U.S. President Donald Trump on his first official visit to Britain as president.

The Prime Minister prefers a tightly-controlled approach to press conferences, delivering carefully-scripted lines to drive home her core message. Protesters flew a blimp depicting the US president as an orange, snarling baby outside the British parliament.

"Now he might not like the current president, but I represent the United States", Trump said.

Donald Trump has heaped praise on "incredible" Theresa May and hailed UK-US relations as the "highest level of special" hours after incendiary comments criticising her premiership.

"I didn't criticize the prime minister", Trump said.

Last week at the same location, May finally won agreement for her Brexit strategy from her cabinet but within days, two senior ministers quit, which Trump said earlier in the week had left Britain in turmoil.

He also said Boris Johnson would make a "great prime minister".

"It's for Trump to explain why he thinks there is a link between immigration into Europe and the rise in crime", he said.

Younger voters - 18-34-year-olds - backed Mr Trump publicising his views on Brexit by 54% to 40%, compared with opposition by 51% to 46% among those aged 55 and older.

"I guess when they put out blimps to make me feel unwelcome, no reason for me to go to London", Trump told the Sun tabloid.

"But what has to happen first.is that we reach an agreement with the European Union itself, so that we can exactly piece together how we can do the trade deals we want to do with the rest of the world". It was one of more than a hundred protests police expected during Trump's four-day trip.

During the press conference, Mr Trump - who regularly accuses the U.S. media of "fake news" over its coverage of him - also clashed with a reporter from the American NBC network, describing it as "possibly worse than CNN".

Trump is meeting May for a working lunch before meeting the Queen for tea and a likely round at his Scottish golf course. "I think it changed the fabric of Europe and, unless you act very quickly, it's never going to be what it was and I don't mean that in a positive way".

"I think they like me a lot in the UK", Trump said in Brussels.
