In a letter written to the 25-year-old coach while he and the 12 members of the Wild Boar soccer team were still trapped in the cave, parents thanked him for taking care of their children. But how many of us know that India too played a very crucial role in the mission? He said they survived by drinking clean water dripping into the cave.

The first footage of the Thai boys in hospital has been released.

"They can only stay in their beds", a doctor told media.

"Everyone is strong in mind and heart", he said at a news conference of officials involved in the rescue.

Parents awaiting reunion were seen crying and waving to the boys through a glass barrier meant to safeguard against potential infections. Authorities are anxious about the possibility of infections picked up in the cave.

Richard Harris, a world-renowned medic and diver whose presence in the dramatic rescue of the Wild Boars squad was specially requested by experts, was reportedly the last person to leave the water-logged cavern on Tuesday.

But Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha said on Tuesday extra precautions would have be implemented both inside and outside the cave to safeguard tourists.

Rescuers provided medical aid and assessed the health of a group of teenage soccer players and their coach who have been stuck inside the Tham Luang Nang Non cave in Chiang Rai province since June 23.

At one point, a boy can be seen waving his hand slightly and gripping his fingers into a fist, suggesting they were not completely unconscious.

The most unsafe part of the journey out of the labyrinthine cave system was the first kilometer, during which they were required to squeeze through a narrow flooded channel. "You have made a name for the SEALs unit", a senior navy official told those gathered.

The rescue chief also revealed that the operation was speeded up because of falling oxygen levels within the cave complex, as well as expected downpours and possible rise of water levels.

But Mr Volanthen dismissed the idea, adding: "We are not heroes".

Thailand spent yesterday celebrating the successful mission. The navy has a motto: 'We don't abandon the people'.

According to a Guardian report, water pumps that were used to drain the area and provide air pockets failed just hours after the last boy had been extracted from the cave.

But Mr Volanthen credited the worldwide team of military, navy and civilian divers who all "pulled together". "This is what we have been racing against since day one".

Foreign helpers, including some of the world's best cave divers, also began travelling home. They got far enough inside that rising floodwaters, not unusual at the cave this time of year, blocked their exit.

Manchester City and England defender Kyle Walker, whose team faces Croatia in the second semi-final later on Wednesday, said he wanted to send shirts to the boys.
