The report of Shortland's hiring closes the book on a director search that took up half of a year and involved more than 70 directors, with the producers at Marvel being extremely diligent in searching for the right director for the film.

Marvel Studios has found its director for their upcoming Black Widow movie.

The actress admired Shortland's handling of the female lead in Lore, a critically acclaimed 2012 drama that tells of a young woman who leads her siblings through Germany as the Allied army rolls in.

Shortland won the gig from a field of 49 candidates including Amma Asante (Belle), Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don't Cry) and Maggie Betts (Novitiate), according to Deadline.

The film is one of several female-centric Marvel properties is either developing or in production on now, including "Captain Marvel" starring Brie Larson.

Shortland will be the first female director to singlehandedly direct a Marvel Studios movie. Her most recent film, 2017's thriller Berlin Syndrome, was an adaptation of the novel by Melanie Joosten.

Scar-Jo will reprise the role for the movie which is said to be set before the events of the first Avengers movie. The character has a tortured past, she's had to make a lot of hard decisions.

Fans have been clamoring for a Black Widow solo film ever since the character made her big-screen debut in 2010's Iron Man 2.

Scarlett Johansson is also producing the Black Widow movie, and she recently appeared in The Avengers: Infinity War.
