And then the miracle: they got out.

The Thai Navy SEAL commander said the Royal Thai Navy is always prepared to respond to disasters in the country, stressing his belief in the capabilities of all officials, and thanked for the dedication from all personnel and support from the general public.

Volunteers celebrate at a makeshift press centre in Mae Sai district of Chiang Rai province on July 10, 2018, after the twelve boys and their football coach were rescued.

Volanthen and another British diver, Richard Stanton, were the first rescuers to locate the boys and their coach in the Tham Luang Nang Non Cave in northern Thailand. The boys, aged 11 to 16, had to dive for part of their journey out before they were put on green plastic toboggan-like stretchers and carried, at times through steep, rocky tunnels, with ropes, strung overhead. "You have made a name for the SEALs unit", a senior navy official told those gathered.

The rescue mission captivated the world after the group was discovered by two British divers on July 2.

When Volanthen, 50, arrived at Heathrow Airport in London later Thursday, he was greeted by reporters and cheered by people who recognized him.

"What we do is very calculating".

"We were very, very pleased it worked out quite so well".

The news comes a day after Pure Flix CEO and managing partner Michael Scott announced that his studio was working on a dramatic adaptation of the events surrounding the trapped Thai soccer team and their 25-year-old coach.

The discovery prompted the stunning rescue of the boys which captivated Thailand and the world, with the final members finally emerging safely Tuesday after 18 days underground. "At that point we realised the enormity of the situation", Volanthen said.

He said "relief is the word I would use" to describe the moment he and Stanton found the group.

Bill Whitehouse, vice-chairman of the British Cave Rescue Council, said that some of the divers "have been on pretty hairy recovery dives before. the dives in this case were not particularly deep and nothing too extraordinary". We're very relieved that they're all alive.

The team became captured within a cave in Thailand on June 23 and survived for 18 long days before being miraculously rescued by a fearless group of global divers. "He told me that as soon as they finished practice they went to play at the cave".

"Very good. The best - not good - the very best". "So, that seemed to work".

Narongsak also paid tribute to former Thai SEAL diver Saman Kunan, who died in the attempt to save the boys, saying his sacrifice added to the team's determination to complete their mission. "It's kind of bittersweet for what's otherwise been an excellent operation".

"It's an absolute tragedy", he said.
