Bernie Sanders Calls for Restructuring ICE Amid Child Separation Backlash

"The Democrats are making a strong push to abolish ICE, one of the smartest, toughest and most spirited law enforcement groups of men and women that I have ever seen", Mr. Trump tweeted.

The calls come after far-left primary challenger and ICE opponent Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez shocked the party's establishment last week by beating Rep. Joseph Crowley, D-N.Y.

In a year of pivotal mid-term elections, there are questions about whether a slogan will serve as rhetorical fodder for incumbents to simplify political resistance to immigration raids and family separation, stoking fears of a radical "open border" threat. "We give them room to talk about better immigration policy", she said, comparing the circumstances to the civil rights movement, when Martin Luther King Jr., was viewed more favorably by white power brokers than more strident leaders like Malcolm X.

Perhaps no Trump policy has provoked more emotional reaction than the practice of separating illegal border crossers from the children they brought with them to the United States.

In January 2017, the president signed an executive order to increase the agency's staffing by 10,000 employees.

With marches and rallies organized around the absurd "Abolish ICE" demand, many might think this is what all Democrats now believe.

"The problem you have with ICE is they're there to be law enforcement and the reason so many of them are either quitting or being so critical, they're being told to do something else", Leahy said Friday.

A few Democrats realize this: Sen.

There are fair criticisms that ICE has become unwieldy and that its reputation sometimes interferes with its ability to do its job.

".@SenWarren, why are you supporting criminals moving weapons, drugs, and victims across our nation's borders?" You must not know what ICE really does'. They want to make sure parents aren't separated from their kids, but they want tough border enforcement.

Last month, after nearly a year of litigation, a US district judge ruled in favor of Philadelphia in its "sanctuary city" case against the White House.

"I don't think ICE today is working as intended", Gillibrand said Thursday night on CNN's "Cuomo PrimeTime".

Warren posted on Facebook, writing, "The President's deeply immoral actions have made it obvious that we need to rebuild our immigration system from top to bottom, starting by replacing ICE with something that reflects our values".

A vast majority of voters already think we aren't doing enough to secure the borders.

Rather than being treated with the dignity and respect befitting all humans, and particularly those seeking asylum, she was detained by ICE and held in a freezing cold cell with the lights turned on 24 hours a day.

"We need to start a fresh conversation".

50 percent of voters indicated they believe his immigration policies stem from "a honest interest in controlling our borders", but a whopping 44 percent said his main motive is his "racist beliefs".

"This is ugly and this is wrong and this is not the way to run our country", she said.
