All passenger and freight service will be discontinued in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba and nearly all of British Columbia, with the exception of the Vancouver-Seattle run.

Kendrick said 415 people will be out of work as a result of the decision, which he estimates will impact roughly two million consumers.

All routes in Ontario and Quebec will continue unchanged, aside from the Trans-Canada service west of Sudbury in northern Ontario.

"But simply put, the issue that we have seen is the routes in rural parts of Canada-specifically Western Canada-are just not sustainable anymore".

In a statement, the company called the decision "regrettable", blaming it on declining ridership in rural communities, increased competition from subsidized national and inter-regional passenger transportation services, the entry of low-priced carriers, regulatory constraints, and increased vehicle travel.

Kendrick says Greyhound Canada will continue to petition Ottawa to help fund transportation in northern communities.

"What should have happened was STC and the government could have taken a look at how they could have better utilized the public service that they were providing, whatever that could have meant", she said.

"Given the developments today, we need the federal government to step up and come up with a national solution that keeps Canadians connected across the country", Mason said in an email statement.

"The company has experienced significant losses despite continued efforts to return to viability".

Joe Hargrave said his government - which axed the STC a year ago - had seen an industry-wide decrease in bus ridership.

Hollingworth is also concerned about some of his employees who live in other communities but use the Greyhound to get to Valleyview.

"It is already well documented that our citizens have to ride the bus for hours, some longer than 14 hours, in order to see a doctor".

Odelie Bernard-Labelle from Montreal was waiting at the Maritime Bus station in Halifax Wednesday, and said as a person without a auto, she sees buses as an important transportation option.

"We have made the hard decision to downsize our Canadian business by discontinuing operations in all provinces except Ontario and Quebec and one route in British Columbia".

The recent Greyhound cancellations would create a massive gap in transit services and leave many communities stranded.

In a Facebook post, it said it will be offering service from Winnipeg to Thunder Bay, Ont., Thompson, Man., Regina, Saskatoon and Prince Albert, Sask., starting October 31 - the day Greyhound shuts down its western operation.
