  • Syria from Israel's northern border

For the second time in three days, the Israeli military announced it had fired a US -supplied Patriot missile at an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) allegedly belonging to the Syrian military and flying over the tense, disputed border between the longtime foes. The province borders the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

The defence system was sacked at a Syrian drone "flying over the demilitarized zone", adding that it was "most likely intercepted", the military said. However, Iranian and Russian interests in Syria are not perfectly aligned, and Russia has needed to balance its positive relations with Israel, whose Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has opposed the presence of Iranians on the Israel-Syria border.

"The IDF will continue to operate against attempts to violate the 1974 Separation of Forces Agreement and threats to Israeli sovereignty or civilians", a follow-up tweet read.

On Wednesday, a drone traveled about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) inside Israeli territory before it was shot down.

On Thursday, the Israeli military targeted Syrian military positions in response.

Velayati cited Russian and Iranian cooperation in Syria, where they both support President Bashar al-Assad's forces in the seven-year Syrian civil war against what the Iranian official called "terrorism and its sponsors".

Velayati was also present at a meeting of top Iranian security officials in the city of Mashhad on August 14, 1993, where the decision to bomb the AMIA building is understood to have been made.

Ali Akbar Velayati, an global adviser to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution who is in Russian Federation for an official visit, has shrugged off the concurrent trip to Russian Federation by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, saying "nobody cares" about the Netanyahu's "baseless and illogical remarks".

In recent weeks, Israel's military has been on high alert over the Syrian regime's offensive in the southern and southwestern parts of the country. The 2011 Daraa protests and the Syrian government's crackdown were widely considered to have helped spark the armed rebellion that once saw opposition fighters in control of most of the country.

Iran does not plan on reducing its involvement in the Syrian conflict despite heightened US pressure to remove their forces.
