  • Adidas Pledges To Only Use Recycled Plastic By 2024

Instead, by 2024, Adidas will only use recycled polyester in its shoes and clothing.

Adidas is showing that it can, and will, reduce its use of plastics completely, paving the way for others to follow suit in the future.

Eric Liedtke, head of Adidas' global brands, told the Financial Times that about 50 percent of the material used in the 920 million individual items adidas sells is polyester. Environmentalists have hailed the move to expand on the recycling the already do with their Parley line, and that Adidas estimates they will save in the range of 40 tons of plastic this year alone.

In addition, adidas also announced that their apparel lines for 2019 will contain about 41% recycled polyester and that they will stop using "virgin" plastics in their offices, retail stores, warehouses, and distribution centers, resulting in saving about 40 tons of plastic per year. "With those kind of volumes, we can not make the transition overnight". The company reported selling 1 million pairs of the eco-friendly shoe previous year.

In 2016, Adidas collaborated with environmental group Parley for the Oceans to mass-produce shoes made from recycled water bottles. Almost one million individual runners participated. More than 70 percent of the plastics made by us humans winds up in a landfill or in the waterways of the world, and making plastics accounts for 6 percent of the world's oil consumption. The Card is now a prototype and will be tested and refined over time with public availability anticipated in the next 12 months.

Recent research found that there may be more plastic in the world's oceans than fish by 2048.

Adidas is planning to use only recycled polyester in all its shoes and clothing within the next six years in a push to increase the sustainability of its supply chain.
