Sky Sports F1 will be at the heart of the Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend, with a must-watch two-hour live show on Sunday. Siemens UK has partnered with Cranfield University to customise this 1965 Ford Mustang and this will be the first time an autonomous auto will make its way up the hill. Siemens and Cranfield University are taking a different approach, however, letting their best autonomous technology pilot a converted 1965 Ford Mustang on the famous course.
Lee Dryden, marketing communications head at Siemens: "It's the first time we have done anything like this and yes of course it is fun to do it for the Festival of Speed, but it also makes you think what cars might be like in the future. The Siemens Autonomous Hillclimb challenge project connects the classic spirit of automotive adventure with advanced technology", said Dr James Brighton, Senior Lecturer at Cranfield.
The Mustang is fitted with numerous high-tech sensors and programmed with control algorithms that work together to steer the vehicle on the intended path. There is no question that if not for the corrections of the human driver, this autonomous auto would have crashed, but with the help of the man behind the wheel, the vehicle makes it safely to the end of the course - likely turning one of the slowest times of the day. Location scanning technology from Bentley Systems provides a 3D scan of the track in relation to the car's own position. A team from the university has already scanned the course, creating a detailed 3D map for the auto to follow. Essentially, it will have an idea of where it's going before it rolls a single degree up that hill. It recently completed a full hill climb ahead of its official run, and to celebrate the achievement, a video camera went along for the ride.
The app, available on Android and iOS, will be free to download and will be a must-have for the thousands of fans attending any of Goodwood's three major motorsport events or watching the action from home.
