Trump followed a similar pattern at this week's North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit by slamming US allies at the outset but ultimately claiming North Atlantic Treaty Organisation was stronger than it was before.

The Guardian focuses on Donald Trump's attempt to clean up the mess he has created with his comments by doing what he does best - denying it: "I didn't criticise PM". Add Donald Trump as an interest to stay up to date on the latest Donald Trump news, video, and analysis from ABC News.

"Theresa May should condemn Trump for this ugly dog-whistle politics, and apologise for Zac Goldsmith's disgraceful London mayoral campaign, which these remarks echo".

Their meeting lasted almost an hour and was the final engagement in Mr Trump's two-day working visit to the UK.

This is what White House spokespeople do when a statement they're tasked to deliver is ridiculous and they'd rather attribute it to Trump rather than sacrifice their own credibility.

Later in the press conference at the prime minister's country residence, Chequers, Mr Trump verbally sparred with the Sun reporter who had interviewed him, Tom Newton Dunn.

"He obviously likes me and says very good things about me", he added. "I used to love London as a city". I haven't been there in a long time.

Protesters in fancy dress, drag queens, punks, a Boris Johnson lookalike and Ken Livingstone, the former London mayor, were among the teeming crowd that moved peacefully through the West End. Other protests are taking place across the United Kingdom on Friday and Saturday. "Look at what is going on in London".

"We wanted to embarrass him and I think we have done that today".

"The idea that we restrict freedom of speech, the right to assemble, the right to protest because somebody might be offended is a slippery slope", Khan told BBC Radio.

British Prime Minister Theresa May has a good relationship with Donald Trump and is confident a trade deal can be agreed with the United States after the president criticized her Brexit plans in an interview, her spokeswoman said.

"The deal she is striking is a much different deal than the one the people voted on", in the 2016 European Union referendum, Trump said.

In the interview with the Sun, Trump - who has been a long-time supporter of Brexit - said May had not listened to his advice on how to do a Brexit deal, saying: "I would have done it much differently".

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders later sought to limit the damage, saying Trump was "thankful for the wonderful welcome" he received in Britain. But at the Chequers news conference, Trump said he had been responding to the Sun's question about Johnson as a possible prime minister, adding: "He has been very nice to me".

"You have a mayor who has done a bad job in London", he said in an interview with Friday's edition of The Sun newspaper. "He is thankful for the wonderful welcome from the prime minister here in the U.K".
