Writers Guild Takes Stand on Potential 'Roseanne' Spinoff

The network is now pursuing options to create a spinoff series that doesn't include Barr.

A Roseanne spin-off has all but been confirmed after the show's former lead, comedienne Roseanne Barr, agreed to waive her rights to the characters that she helped create.

ABC and producer Carsey-Werner have insisted that Barr not be involved creatively or financially in a spin off, despite her entitlement to fees on any spin-off of the eponymous show centered on the character she created.

The potential spin-off would focus on Sara Gilbert's character Darlene, and the report adds that talks have been making "some important progress".

Roseanne writers, producers and castmembers, such as stars Laurie Metcalf and John Goodman, are said to be attached to the spinoff at the rates they had previously negotiated for the second season of the revival (ABC had exercised their options for 10 more episodes).

In June, Barr tweeted that she "begged" the network to not cancel the top-rated rebooted comedy. It would see Barr paid a one-time pay-out, in exchange for her relinquishing her rights to the series and stopping future claims against the network for any profits made for any spinoffs that do come to fruition.

"I hear another name that is under consideration is The Conners, which would keep the strong ties to the original series without any Roseanne references while also underscoring the show's family and ensemble nature", Deadline reporter Nellie Andreeva wrote Friday.

By her agreeing to walk away from the spin off process, the next step is negotiating "go-away" payoff money with her, a source tells the Hollywood Reporter. "I only care about apologizing 4 the hurt I have unwittingly & stupidly caused".

In May, Barr tweeted a comment (now deleted) about former president Obama aide Jarrett.

In Canada, CTV pulled Roseanne from its television and streaming platforms.
