  • FYI Woolworths National Ban On Single Use Plastic Bags Begins From Today

Instead, shoppers will be able to buy reusable bags including a 15cent thick plastic bag, a 99cent foldable bag and a $2.49 chiller bag or they will be able to bring their own bags to the supermarket.

Plastic bags will no longer be available in Woolworths stores from today.

Queensland and Western Australia will enforce the bag bans from July 1, joining South Australia, Tasmania, the ACT and the Northern Territory.

Rigters Supermarket Group will still supply single-use plastic bags until the State-wide ban begins.

Speaking to Channel 7's Sunrise to mark the start of the supermarket's plastic bag ban on Wednesday, Mr Banducci was asked to address new research that suggested 16 per cent of shoppers were still scamming self-service check-outs, either by scanning items incorrectly or stealing outright.

THE union representing retail workers welcomes Woolworths' decision to phase out single use plastic bags, but reminds shoppers to remain respectful as part of it's "Don't Bag Retail Staff" campaign.

That is, those who forget to bring their reusable plastic bags.

SDA National Secretary Gerard Dwyer said the ban had been widely publicised and customers needed to bear with staff during the changeover.

"As we make a change to a non-plastic bag shopping experience in Woolworths, as of today, we just want to make sure that our retail workers are treated with respect and dignity that they deserve at work", Mr Dwyer says.

"Retail workers should not have to bear the brunt of any abusive behaviour, just for following the new rules".

"All profits from that bag will go back to Junior Landcare and really help communities in Australia build more activism by the youth around doing good things for the environment".

But not everyone is happy with the ban - with a recent survey from Canstar Blue showing one in five Australians oppose the ban and half of us have been stockpiling.

Single-use plastic bags are slowly being phased out across the world.
