  • Larry Kudlow had heart attack, Donald Trump says

White House spokesman Hogan Gidley said in a Twitter posting.

Kudlow, a longtime television commentator, has been a staunch defender of Trump's much-criticized stance on global trade.

White House National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow holds a news briefing about the upcoming G7 meetings in the Brady Press Briefing Room at the White House June 6, 2018 in Washington, DC. "We are confident he is in good hands at Walter Reed Medical Center & wish him a speedy recovery", tweeted House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

Shortly after the news broke, Kudlow's wife Judith informed The Washington Post that "he's doing fine".

Mr. Trump is in Singapore where he met North Korean leader Chairman Kim Jong-un.

Mr Kudlow, 70, a key member of Mr Trump's team had kept up the barrage of criticism after the United States blamed Canada on Sunday for the disastrous ending to the weekend G7 summit, saying Prime Minister Justin Trudeau "stabbed us in the back", while American allies held Washington responsible.

Before joining the White House, Kudlow vocally opposed the protectionist trade agenda that Trump promoted, but he has become a forceful advocate for the president's policies since joining the administration.

"He really kind of stabbed us in the back", Kudlow said. He previously worked as a host on CNBC, and before that as a banker and economic adviser in the Reagan administration.

Kudlow has also talked openly about his battles with drug addiction (specifically cocaine) and alcohol in the 1990's, and took a leave of absense from the financial firm Bear Stearns to check himself into rehab.

He has also worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of NY. "You've got people like (trade advisor) Peter Navarro and all - hawkish views on trade", Varathan added.
