Wetherspoon to stop selling champagne ahead of Brexit

Pub chain Wetherspoon is to sell more drinks from the United Kingdom and non-EU brewers in the run up to Brexit.

Instead of French fizz, Wetherspoon will sell brut and rosé sparkling wines made by Denbies winery in Dorking, Surrey, as well as Hardys' sparkling Pinot Chardonnay from Australia.

Founder and vocal Brexit supporter Tim Martin said that the move to non-EU suppliers would help to make prices lower in the long run, if the United Kingdom ends tariffs once it has left the customs union.

Martin - a vocal eurosceptic - said the pub chain is reviewing all of its products in a company-wise reshuffle which could take up to two years, something he hopes will make the business "more competitive".

Mr Martin said: "The EU's customs union is a protectionist system which is widely misunderstood".

"Tariffs are imposed on wine from Australia, New Zealand and the United States, and also on coffee, oranges, rice and more than 12,000 other products".

However, we are starting to make the transition to non-EU trade now'. Most of our media is owned by a handful of offshore billionaires with personal agendas.

Swedish cidermaker Kopparberg escaped the chop, after the company "confirmed that it will be producing its cider in the United Kingdom post-Brexit", The Guardian reports.

The news is also a boost for United Kingdom wheat beers such as Blue Moon Belgian White, Thornbridge Versa Weisse Beer, and SA Brains Atlantic White.

Under the plan, British wheat beer and alcohol-free beer will replace the current beers brewed in Germany.

Sparkling wines from the United Kingdom will include Denbies Sparkling Whitedowns Brut and Whitedowns Rose Brut, as well as Hardys Sparkling Pinot Chardonnay from Australia.

Wetherspoon's will continue to serve Kopparberg cider from Sweden.

Martin has previously argued that if the United Kingdom ends tariffs and agrees to unilateral free trade, Wetherspoon's pints could be made cheaper.

Wetherspoons boss Tim Martin - who is vocally pro-Brexit - revealed there is a big menu shake-up coming, and a lot of punters' favourite tipples will disappear between now and 2020.

Wetherspoon has four pubs in suburban Dublin and one in Cork.

'For the United Kingdom to get a good deal from the European Union, there must be an alternative to show we are serious.

He added: "I think it's a good idea though to look around the world as we've done with the still wine and it'll work pretty well, especially when we leave the customs union which is a very important point for the British public".
