  • Sebastian Vettel wins Canadian Grand Prix for 50th career victory

The weather is also often an issue at the Canadian Grand Prix. "I quickly saw that it was going to be hard to take pole position but you always do your best and try to get the best out of the auto".

That honour went to Sebastian Vettel.

The Englishman, who arrived in North America with a 14-point lead over Vettel, will now head to the next round in France trailing his Ferrari rival by one point.

Again, Kimi Raikkonen led the Ferrari charge in second place, but Monaco victor Daniel Ricciardo, who missed a large chunk of FP2 as mechanics rushed to fix a mechanical problem, was able to end the day third.

The Sky Sports broadcast caught the flag waving as fourth-place Daniel Ricciardo and fifth-place Lewis Hamilton started lap 70.

Vettel has now opened up the race for the Drivers' Championship title, but can he extend his slender lead in the coming weeks?

The Finn added: "It's always annoying when it's so close and we're not ahead - but starting on the front row is good for this race". The ordering of the grid, and the mix of tyre strategies, promised to produce an entertaining spectacle but as soon as Valtteri Bottas pulled out a brilliant block on Max Verstappen at Turn 1 it petered out in to a procession. "We thought Ferrari and Mercedes were going to qualify on the ultras".

After the first runs, Hamilton found himself in P5 after a costly lockup on what would otherwise have been a great lap. He retired to the garage after 43 laps - the eighth time he failed to finish at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

And it was Vettel who finished the qualifying session in first place - and he will start Sunday's race as favourite.

Hamilton said he would have liked to have spent longer on the softest compound in practice.

"It was just a very hard session", he said. Our single lap was good too, but today it just didn't come together. The auto is working well and we're just missing out on top speed. "You can't come to Montreal and think it's going to be a walk in the park because that's the kind of wake-up call you get". Sebastian simply did a better job when it counted in Q3.

"I think it was just a combination of things", he admitted. I'll dig deep tonight. Early on he told his team he was having "dropouts of power" from the auto, which was from the power unit running too hot in the first stint.

"Perfect is probably a good way to describe it".
