Fox Sports COO Eric Shanks on the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation and the announcement the 2026 World Cup will be held in Canada, Mexico and America.

Delegates from worldwide soccer's governing body Federation Internationale de Football Association voted Wednesday at their congress in Moscow to select the joint North American bid, a day before this year's World Cup kicks off in Russia. The United States is likely to have 10 cities selected to host games, while Mexico and Canada are expected to each have three.

A statement released by the Colorado Rapids, the Denver Sports Commission and the Stadium Management Company said Denver is among approximately 23 cities in consideration to host World Cup games eight years from now.

The "United" bid, that will see 60 of the tournament's games held in the US, with Canada and Mexico getting 10 each, beat out the underdog campaign of Morocco to bring soccer's biggest show back to American soil.

Among the 22 other host city finalists are Washington and New York/New Jersey, both of which hosted matches in the 1994 World Cup, the last held in North America.

Morocco's presentation took some not-so-subtle shots at the US, highlighting the fact that guns are banned in Morocco and stating that during the 1994 World Cup even world-renowned soccer stars were unknown in America.

There will be 16 host cities split between the United States (10), Canada (three), and Mexico (three).

"The US has put together a STRONG bid w/ Canada & Mexico for the 2026 World Cup", Trump wrote.

In making its case to voting members, the North American bid accentuated the quantity and quality of available stadiums, experience in staging major events and the infrastructure necessary to transport and house tens of thousands of visiting fans. Hasseltine said. "We want to make sure the legacy lives forever and lives long beyond the games' being here". Matches in Mexico will be played in Mexico City, Monterrey, Guadalajara; games in Canada will be played in Toronto, Montreal, and Edmonton, according to Pro Soccer Talk.

Morocco has made five unsuccessful bids to host the World Cup. It also has proposed not one traditional opening match but three (one in each nation).

It's unclear at the moment how travel will shake out and how far teams will have to travel for matches.

First, North America accelerated its efforts the past four months by sending the three co-chairmen - Cordeiro, Canada's Steven Reed and Mexico's Decio de Maria - on separate lobbying trips around the world. Host nations have always been granted automatic berths into the tournament, including in the lone previous World Cup that was co-hosted by multiple countries (2002; Japan and South Korea).

Even if Trump were to be elected for a second four-year term in 2020 he would not be in office when the World Cup kicks off in 2026.

With 48 teams, there will be 16 groups of three teams.

The Rose Bowl and Camping World Stadium were venues in 1994.
