The Trump administration has sanctioned five Russian companies and three individuals for aiding the Russian intelligence agency's worldwide cyberattacks, Axios reported Monday.

"The United States are now conducting activities to counter hostile players, who on the orders of the Russian Federation and its military and intelligence services increase offensive cyberportal Russia".

Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) placed four companies, one research institute and three Russian individuals on the sanctions list, freezing all assets subject to us jurisdiction and barring USA companies and individuals from doing business with them.

The Treasury Department said it was imposing sanctions on five Russian firms and three of their executives under legislation passed past year and an executive order aimed at punishing efforts to hack into USA computer systems. The latter provides underwater equipment and diving systems for Russian agencies.

The two other Russia-based companies are Kvant Scientific Research Institute and Divetechnoservices.

In particular, Aleksandr Tribun, Oleg Chirikov and Vladimir Kaganskiy along with Russian companies Erpscan, which offices are located in Amsterdam, Prague and Tel-Aviv, were included to the sanctions list. The author has made every effort to ensure accuracy of information provided; however, neither Kitco Metals Inc. nor the author can guarantee such accuracy.

Those being sanctioned are accused of assisting Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) with both cyber and underwater technologies to disrupt undersea communications cables.

The Treasury notice drew attention to recent Russian attempts to destabilize its geopolitical rivals in the West including the NotPetya ransomware campaign, attacks on the USA energy grid and the VPNFilter campaign to compromise network devices around the world. Hacks in the runup to the USA presidential election in 2016 are also linked to Russian Federation.

According to the newsletter The Bell, Divetechnoservices has won more than 100 military procurement contracts since 2014 worth 3 billion rubles ($47.8 million).

No mention of Russian attacks on USA elections was mentioned in the press release.

"Today's action also targets the Russian government's underwater capabilities", the Treasury Department said.

Washington has imposed new sanctions against Russian Federation.

While the Trump administration has time and again vocally supported the Russian government, including recently advocating for its inclusion in the G7, President Donald Trump did sign on a new Russian sanctions bill last summer.
