  • US fighter jet crashes into sea off Japan - reports

The F-15 fighter went down in the sea about 80 kilometers south of Naha City early Monday morning. He suffered a broken leg and was taken to a USA military hospital in Okinawa Prefecture. The pilot is not in a life-threatening condition.

Following the crash of the US F-15C Eagle jet, the Japanese Defense Ministry reportedly called for the improvement and safety of USA military flights in the region.

The Air Force said in a statement that the pilot has been rescued.

Col. Richard Tanner, 18th Wing vice commander, thanked the Naha-based rescue squadron for its quick response.

JAPAN- A US F15 fighter jet crashed off the southern coast of Japan on Monday but the pilot ejected and was rescued by Japanese forces, Tokyo's defence minister said.

According to Stars and Stripes, this is the 12th crash involving USA military aircraft this year. "Accidents involving United States military aircraft are occurring repeatedly".

"I will ask for detailed reports about why it happened", he added.

The incident occurred during a training flight. Citing local people's concerns, he said the prefecture will lodge a protest on the matter. "If that happens, we can not fulfill our responsibilities to our children and grandchildren". F-15 training has been halted until the 18'th Wing's safety, operations and procedures are reviewed.

The heavy US military presence in Okinawa has been the source of friction with the local government and some residents.
