US, Canada, Mexico win bid to host 2026 FIFA World Cup

  • US, Mexico and Canada to host 2026 World Cup as Morocco lose out

Canada has never hosted a men's World Cup but held the women's tournament in 2015.

Morocco, which has now lost five bid campaigns, was classy in defeat - congratulating the North American winners.

President Donald Trump's negative comments on African countries and his bid to tighten immigration restrictions on some nations have likely helped Morocco's cause.

The soccer showpiece will return to the US for the first time since 1994 after gaining 134 votes, while Morocco got 65 at the FIFA Congress in Moscow on Wednesday.

As nice as it is to travel and experience new countries, having the tournament come to our own backyard is a chance that simply can not be missed, especially considering it will be held in three separate countries for the first time in the history of the World Cup.

Federation Internationale de Football Association have announced that all video assistant referees (VAR) at the 2018 World Cup will wear official match kit during games, despite not actually being inside the stadium.

Although it will be the first tournament to be hosted by three nations, the vast majority of games will be held in the Unites States.

Herdman pointed to the performance of national team member Alphonso Davies, 17, who spoke to delegates ahead of their vote Wednesday, as representative of the quality of the young talent on his team.

Under the current blueprint, the US would host the lion's share of games with 60, compared to 10 each for Canada (with Edmonton, Montreal and Toronto serving as host cities) and Mexico.

They warned "the amount of new infrastructure required for the Morocco 2026 bid to become reality can not be overstated". The 2026 World Cup will be the fourth men's World Cup hosted in North America, with Mexico hosting it in 1970 and 1986 and the United States previously hosting it in 1994.

2026 ushers in the start of the 48-team World Cup, which gives teams from North America an enhanced opportunity of qualifying for the competition.

The games in Canada will be divided between Montreal, Edmonton and Toronto. We've landed a World Cup.

Instead of three automatic places in the tournament, six will be given by that time.

The 2026 World Cup will be the first tournament played in the expanded 48-team format, up from the current 32 countries.

But there is no more unpredictable entity in global sport than soccer's governing body, even as it loudly claims to have cleaned up its act after being engulfed in financial scandal in recent times. Mexico has played in every World Cup since 1990.

"Both bids were of a very high quality and we welcome the fact that the bidding process was both open and transparent".

Both bids made their final appeals to UEFA voters in Moscow on Tuesday, with Morocco and United expected to get a vast show of support from their respective confederations.
