United States president's administration owns its cruel policy of separating families

  • US separates 2000 children from parents at Mexico border

Top White House adviser Kellyanne Conway claimed on Sunday she and other Donald Trump aides dislike the practice of separating children from their parents at the border - but she denied the fact that the controversial situation results from a Trump administration policy shift. That means that instead of being put in immigration detention - where families can stay together - when a family crosses the border illegally, the adults will be subject to criminal prosecution, and since children can't be put in federal jails, they will be removed from the parents.

Because children can not be held in criminal detention, the policy soon led to a spike in children being separated from the families with whom they'd approached the border. Republicans control both houses of Congress. Some mothers say they were told their children were being taken for a bath, but were never returned.

White House counselor Kellyanne Conway wants everyone to know that "nobody likes" Trump's policy that is now separating immigrant parents from their children. Since children can not be jailed in federal prisons, they're placed in shelters that have long existed for unaccompanied immigrant children arriving on the border alone. "It's zero tolerance. I don't think you have to justify it", former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon said Sunday on ABC's "This Week".

Trump has repeatedly, falsely asserted that a law passed by Democrats is to blame for the family-separation policy.

"This is inhumane", O'Rourke told CNN.

Included in the moderate House GOP bill is a measure that would stop family separations at the border.

That's not the most jaw-dropping rationalisation the administration has offered for its policy of family separation.

Because of a 1997 court settlement that bars children from being imprisoned with parents, Justice Department officials now say they have no choice but to isolate the children.

It's a reminder that as viciously cruel as Trump and the people who work for him can be, they're also a bunch of cowards.

Appearing on NBC's "Meet the Press" Conway said, "As a mother, as a Catholic, as somebody who's got a conscience ..."

"I hate the children being taken away", Trump told reporters Friday.

The policy has cracked Trump's usually united conservative base, with a wide array of religious leaders and groups denouncing it.

USA immigration law does not require families to be split up at the border. "But there's only one way to ensure that is the case: It's for people to stop smuggling children illegally". Implementing the policy exclusively for deterrence purposes, however, has been ruled illegal by USA judges. Her "Be Best" platform, unveiled in May, is dedicated to children's well-being.

The lawmakers in Elizabeth waited about 90 minutes to gain access to the detention facility, which is operated for the USA government by a private contractor. Bannon was previously CEO of the Trump campaign and is a former executive chairman of Breitbart, a far-right online media outlet. Republicans announced that they planned to vote next week on a pair of immigration bills, but Democrats have indicated they are solidly opposed to both of those proposals. But neither bill has much hope of securing enough support in the Republican-controlled Congress, let alone surviving Trump's veto pen.

Roy Garcia, 43, attended the protest with his wife, Linda, and their sons, 8-year-old Julian and 11-year-old Sebastian.
