Uber CEO slams driver who booted lesbian couple over kiss

  • Alex Iovine 26 left and girlfriend Emma Pichl 24 right were riding in an Uber on Saturday evening in Manhattan when the driver kicked them out of the car for sharing a quick kiss

Alex Iovine says their driver reacted irrationally to their backseat display of affection, telling NBC NY, "We peck kissed, like I reached across and pecked kissed her".

A lesbian couple claimed they were kicked out of their Uber by their driver on Saturday after sharing a quick kiss in the backseat of the auto.

The women say that the driver soon pulled over, opened the doors, and said, "You should not do that. We don't get out there much and march in the parade", Iovine says.

During the ride, the driver pulled his vehicle over on Canal Street and ordered the women out of his auto. "This doesn't feel right", Ioving said. "We always thought we lived in this untouchable New York City bubble where LGBTQ is so accepted", Pichl said. "My girlfriend started laughing", Iovine told the tabloid.

In an interview with NBC New York, Iovine admitted that their exchange "turned into anger, which we are not proud of".

Ms Iovine fires back: "I want to understand - what did we do wrong?"

The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission, which licenses about 180,000 drivers of vehicle services and yellow cabs, called his behaviour "ridiculous". He claimed that one woman "forced the other to smell her armpit, they played loud videos on their phones [and] one put her feet on his seat".

"You are not allowed ... it's disrespectful ... it's disrespectful". Iovine said the driver began yelling at the two women for "being disrespectful and inappropriate" after they briefly kissed.

After 4000 fares on Uber, he said he has a stellar rating. The pair had ordered the taxi to take them from Brooklyn to Manhattan. But please don't comment on someone's appearance or ask whether they are single.

The city's Taxi and Limousine Commission said on Monday that no complaint with the agency had been filed in connection to the incident, but that it has launched an investigation.

"Uber does not tolerate any form of discrimination, and we have reached out to the rider regarding her experience", Uber spokeswoman Susan Hendrick told the Daily News. "We never thought something like this would happen to us".

Both Uber and TLC are investigating the incident. "It was a good lesson to show it can happen to you anywhere".

"This blatantly discriminatory behavior described by the complainant is repugnant, and will not be tolerated in the City of New York", Fromberg said. "They reportedly have been refunded the cost of the $22 ride".
