  • Perris torture case: 911 call played in court, disturbing details of alleged abuse released

The 17-year-old girl who called 911 told police she had not completed the first grade and Morris says it was hard to understand her speech.

Louise Turpin and husband, David Turpin appear in Superior Court in Riverside County, Calif. on Wednesday, June 20, 2018 for a preliminary hearing on charges that include torture and child abuse.

"They will wake up at night and they will start crying and they wanted me to call somebody", she said in a high-pitched voice. "I wanted to call y'all so y'all can help my sisters".

The couple has pleaded not guilty to torture, child abuse and all other charges. They are being held on $12 million bail each.

Prosecutors were expected to call law enforcement officers to testify at Wednesday's hearing, but the children are not expected to take the stand. They have pleaded not guilty to the charges.

A 17-year-old girl says on a 911 call played in court that her two little sisters are chained up at their Southern California home.

"Uh, I don't know, nearly a year ago", she said. In the call played in court, according to CBS Los Angeles reporter Nicole Comstock, the girl said she doesn't know much about her mother and that the woman "doesn't take care of us....they only chain us up if we do something wrong".

After they were freed, the siblings were immediately hospitalized and eventually released.

"These punishments would last for weeks or even months at a time", Hestrin said, adding that three of their children were restrained when police first knocked on their door.

After the family moved to Murrieta in 2010, then to Perris in 2014, the severity of the abuse intensified, he said.

The house reeked of human waste, and the evidence of starvation was obvious, with the oldest of 13 siblings weighing just 38kgs.

Children were deprived food and things other kids take for granted, such as toys and games, authorities said. They were allowed to do little except write in journals that may corroborate the horrific stories they told investigators.

The girl planned her escape for two years and was terrified as she climbed out a window to freedom, Riverside County Sheriff's Deputy Manuel Campos testified.

"I don't know much about my mother", the girl continued.

However, during cross-examination, the officer said the 17-year-old had access to social media accounts including YouTube, where videos were posted of her singing. "We live in filth and sometimes I wake up and can't breathe", she said on the recording played Wednesday.

Dirt was caked on the girl's skin and she smelled unbathed, said Campos, who interviewed the girl later in the day.

The caller and her siblings ranged in age from 2 to 29 years old.

She tells the operator her parents are abusive.

In addition to the physical abuse, there was a sexual incident with her father, the girl told police. She didn't like it and pushed away and pulled up her trousers as she heard her mother coming upstairs. When she said she didn't like it and pulled up her trousers, he told her not tell anyone, Campos said.

"Yes you do, yes you do, you do, you want to die", the mother said, according to Campos. She said that she was kept in the room with her sisters for about 20 hours a day, and that she was only allowed to leave the room to eat, use the restroom and brush her teeth, Campos said.

There was no breakfast, and recently lunch and dinner had been combined into one meal that included peanut butter or bologna sandwiches, a frozen burrito and chips, she said.

He also tried to force kisses on her mouth, she told Campos, and this happened about 10 times. Those punishments consisted of getting knocked on her head, pulling on her hair, getting hit and smacked in the face, pushed and choked.

"Do you want to die?" she told Campos, referring to what Louise said during the choking.
