Trump habit of ripping up docs headache for record-keepers

  • Ex-WH aides describe 'adult puzzle' of taping up Trump's torn-up documents

But instead of saying "Mr. President, you need to stop tearing up these documents because it's illegal, and also deeply weird", White House staffers decided it was easier to collect the scraps of paper and have a whole team of government employees tape them back together.

Former aides, who earned salaries of more than $60,000 (£45,000) a year, have claimed they were regularly asked to fix records that the United States president had torn apart.

Lartey told Politico that the documents they had to piece back together included memos, letters and sometimes even newspaper clippings. "I had a letter from [Senate Minority Leader Chuck] Schumer - he tore it up", he said. "It was the craziest thing ever". "We used to have to piece together all of these torn papers, and we weren't supposed to tell anybody". They served as records management analysts.

"You found pieces and taped them back together and then you gave it back to the supervisor", Lartey said. (It was enacted because of - wait for it - Watergate.) But White House aides have had a hard time impressing this upon President Trump, who habitually rips papers up and routinely throws them, confetti-like, in the trash or on the floor, reports Politico.

Reginald Young Jr, who worked as a senior records management analyst, said it was the first time in more than two decades of government service that he had been given such a task.

"We got Scotch tape, the clear kind", Lartey said.

Questions have been raised about Mr Trump's compliance with the presidential records act when he has deleted tweets - which are covered by the law - and re-posted amended versions.

Neither the White House, nor the official that fired Lartey and Young responded to Politico's request for comment.

They had the fragments of paper collected from the Oval Office and the White House's private residence and send to records management office across the street from the White House to be re-assembled.

'It felt like the lowest form of work you can take on without having to empty the trash cans'.

"I was stunned", Lartey said. The policy requires that all memos, letters, documents, and papers touched by the president be kept as historical records in the National Archives.
