President Trump has fired back at actor Robert De Niro for the vulgar comments he made towards him.

De Niro prompted loud applause from the audience of theatre actors, directors and producers at Radio City Music Hall after he twice used the F-bomb against Mr Trump.

President Trump hit back at "Punchy" Robert De Niro on Twitter on Tuesday, two days after the "Raging Bull" star unleashed a torrent of obscenities at the commander-in-chief at the Tony Awards.

Always claiming moral high ground, the media demonized "brash" Trump for his 2005 "locker room talk" yet found De Niro's schoolyard insults of the president worthy of thoughtful consideration as political commentary. Always fighting for, in your own words, truth, transparency and integrity in government.

And in 2016, De Niro, who endorsed Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton at the time, attacked Trump in a video, urging people to vote and saying, "I'd like to punch him in the face". "Boy, do we need that now!"

The actor has always been a vocal critic of the president.

He famously said he wanted to punch Trump "in the face" during the 2016 US Election, called him a "f***ing fool" and the "baby-in-chief" in January 2018, and the following month said the US was now suffering from a "case of temporary insanity".

De Niro, a noted liberal, has been increasingly critical of Trump, a Republican, at smaller show business events in the past year, but none of them had the profile enjoyed by the Tony Awards. This may be a very minute and honest mistake, but since this was Trump, twitterati were unforgiving. "I met him, we shook hands".

You'd think a summit with the leader of a rogue nation known for its brutality against dissidents and continual threats of nuclear war would have satisfied an American president's appetite for confrontation.
