Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he expects North Korea to take the major steps toward nuclear disarmament during Donald Trump's first term, as the USA president tweeted that there's "no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea".

"This is an opportunity to hold their feet to the fire and see if they, North Korea, is serious about this".

In North Korea, state media praised Kim for "opening a new chapter" in relations with the U.S., and said Trump had accepted an invitation to visit the North. "We're hopeful that we can achieve that in the two and a half years".

Trump added that everybody "can now feel much safer than the day I took office" and people could "sleep well tonight!" There is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea ...

Trump told reporters Tuesday that he trusts Kim, but that North Korea's denuclearization process will be thoroughly vetted and that the U.S.

Following the summit on Tuesday, a joint statement between the two leaders also revealed US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and officials from the North would follow up on negotiations "at the earliest possible date".

WATCH: Was the North Korea summit a success or a fail? Several defense officials told CNN there is concern some allies may believe Mattis and the Trump administration were keeping important decisions from them and sharing information first with Kim.

"I suppose we could argue semantics, but let me assure you it's in the document", Pompeo said.

Both Seoul and USA military commanders in the South indicated they had no idea the announcement was coming.

"Not all of that work appeared in the final document". "If you can do that at 27 years old, I mean that's one in 10,000 that could do that".

The lack of details contributed to an air of skepticism in Washington about what Trump accomplished.

Trump assailed media skeptics of his agreement with Kim.

"It might work. After three minutes of being touched and felt by Trump, Kim Jong-un is just going to go, 'Fine, fine, take the nukes". "Trying to reason with someone like that is like trying to hand feed a shark".

"You know, those things, they cost".

Readiness training refers to standard military drills and training carried out by the 28,000 USA troops in South Korea, alongside their South Korean counterparts. A U.S. defense official told CNN on Tuesday, hours after the announcement, that they had "received no updated guidance on execution or cessation of training exercises", including the next big one in late August.

Despite the uncertainties, Trump talked up the outcome of what was the first meeting between a USA and North Korean leader in six decades of hostility. "And, I'll be honest, we are being taken advantage of by virtually very one of those countries".

As Trump acknowledged that denuclearization would not be accomplished overnight, the North suggested Wednesday that Trump had moved away from his demand for complete denuclearization before US sanctions on the long-isolated country are removed. The House's version already has a similar provision, which would limit funds that can be used to reduce troop levels in South Korea, and the Senate includes a "sense of the Senate" provision stipulating that "the significant removal of the United States military forces from the Korean Peninsula is a non-negotiable item" as it relates to North Korea's denuclearization.
