  • VACATION CANCELED: Mitch McConnell CANCELS Senate’s Summer Recess

Trump wrote on Twitter on Monday, June 4, that he has an "absolute right" to pardon himself but said that he had little reason do so because he didn't commit any crime.

Sen. Bob Corker said Tuesday that "a large number' of Senate Republicans are supporting his call for legislation challenging President Trump's decision to impose steep tariffs on US trading partners".

The bill is sponsored by Republicans and frequent Trump critics Jeff Flake of Arizona and Bob Corker of Tennessee.

Asked if those powers of persuasion were effective, Cornyn cracked a grin. Corker wasted little time in jumping in to craft his proposal.

After the call, Corker said he will continue to press his bill, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Corker won't say how many people officially back his plan, but many Republicans say they are anxious about the tariffs Trump announced. "There will be some who have hesitations over politics".

It should be no surprise that Corker, who was among the officials who worked to lure German auto giant Volkswagen to his home town of Chattanooga, that he would part company with Trump on the issue. "There has been historic obstruction by Senate Democrats, and there is a long to-do list, including important nominations and appropriations bills, that we hope they can get taken care of".

As of Tuesday, two more Democrats, Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, D-Texas, and Rep. Filemon Vela, D-Texas, announced they would sign the measure, so the petition, with 215 signatures, would need the support of just three more lawmakers to force the votes. They are joined on the bill by at least 10 other senators, and Corker said Wednesday they may attempt to attach it to an annual defense bill under consideration this week in the Senate.

The defense bill will be open for amendments, McConnell said, and "we'll see what happens as it moves across the floor'".

By Sept. 30, the end of the fiscal year, Congress needs to pass a dozen individual appropriations bills to keep the federal government fully operating.

"While I believe that we should hold China accountable for unfair trade practices and I strongly support strong trade enforcement rules that protect American workers, the President should not be relying on an obscure provision of a trade law meant to uphold national security in order to impose tariffs on our allies".

Trump summoned 13 GOP senators to the Oval Office for a late-afternoon meeting Wednesday that lasted two hours, seeking allies in an effort to push back against proposed legislation that would require the president to get congressional approval for such tariffs. Senate rules require at least a handful of Democratic votes to advance most legislation, given the Republicans' slim 51-49 member hold on the chamber.

Gardner posited that Democrats, many of whom have voiced support for Trump's harder line on trade talks, would balk at the idea of reining him in.

Other Democratic senators running in states Trump won include Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Claire McCaskill of Missouri and Jon Tester of Montana. I've explained it's exactly the same thing. "Insofar as fairness and reciprocity and, ultimately, free trade, I think this is contributing to our economic growth and our confidence".
