Trudeau 'stabbed us in back' on trade, says Trump chief economic adviser

  • U.S. President Donald Trump speaks to members of the media following a meeting during the Group of Seven Leaders Summit in La Malbaie Quebec Canada

Again, the US objection may have simply been meant to gain leverage over Canada and other trading partners.

After President Trump's decision to impose a 25 percent tariff on steel and a 10 percent tariff on aluminum imported from the E.U., Merkel warned the E.U. would be following Canada's lead, moving forward with countermeasures against the U.S.

Kudlow suggested that Trump might have been deploying extra bravado to demonstrate strength before his meeting with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un. "To my friends in Canada, that was one of the worst political miscalculations of a Canadian leader in modern Canadian history".

"Just when we thought it couldn't get worse", Nicholas Burns, U.S. ambassador to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation in the George W. Bush administration, said on Twitter after Kudlow's appearance on CNN.

Trump said Trudeau's promise not to back down from U.S. tariffs is "going to cost a lot of money for the people of Canada".

The U.S. also made the job of protecting and promoting rule of law, democratic values and a shared vision of the future - in the face of a concerted challenge from the likes of China and Russian Federation - even more hard.

"We're like the piggy bank that everybody's robbing, and that ends", he said.

Conservative House Leader Candice Bergen says her party is united with the Liberals when it comes to defending Canada's trade interests. Trump is due to meet with North Korea's Kim on Tuesday.

While the agreement of legislators who are normally opposed on most fronts was remarkable, the anger also spread to pundits, officials, celebrities and ordinary citizens as Canadians vowed consumer boycotts of American goods and brainstormed insults of Trump on social media.

Trudeau has not reacted to the comments.

But even he was nonplussed by Trump's line of attack.

Based on Justin's false statements at his news conference, and the fact that Canada is charging massive Tariffs to our U.S. farmers, workers and companies, I have instructed our U.S. Reps not to endorse the Communique as we look at Tariffs on automobiles flooding the U.S. Market!

Behind his claim lies a difference in how the countries' calculate the trade figures.

Trudeau promised retaliatory measures against USA tariffs on Saturday evening after the summit, a move Navarro called "nothing short of an attack on our political system".

If these goods that originate in Canada and are eventually sold there without have been substantially worked upon in the United States are taken into account then Ottawa comes out the victor.

"Fair Trade is now to be called Fool Trade if it is not Reciprocal", Trump added.

"According to a Canada release, they make nearly 100 Billion Dollars in Trade with US (guess they were bragging and got caught!)".

"If they retaliate, they're making a mistake", Trump declared before departing the annual Group of Seven summit, which includes Britain, Italy, France, Germany and Japan. "The Prime Minister said nothing he hasn't said before - both in public, and in private conversations with the President".

"Canada does not conduct its diplomacy through ad hominem attacks". "We have been, our trade is a disaster, our trade deals".

Trudeau was away from the House of Commons on a "personal" day on Monday.
