Top tier NBN uptake continues to grow

20 June, 2018, 09:31 | Author: Eric Barnett

The increase in high-speed plans follows a concerted push from NBN to encourage telcos to make 50Mbps the typical speed for households, beginning with a discount on 50Mbps wholesale pricing followed by the recent introduction of bundled 50Mbps and 100Mbps wholesale products.

Latest numbers from the NBN Co reveal uptake of top-tier [50Mbps and above] plans have tripled since December 2017 - from 16% to a whopping 44% in May.

Last month, NBN Co also revealed its plan to introduce two new wholesale options, an entry-level plan that could replace the existing 12Mbps speed tier, and another for fixed wireless connections.

After altering the pricing scheme for its different tiers in December and shifting focus primarily to the 50mbps plan by offering wholesale discounts to service providers, NBN Co has managed to get 70% of new contract sign-ups to opt for a plan that's 50mbps or faster.

The report also finds the network rollout is ramping up in Australia's capital cities.

NBN Co's May 2018 monthly progress report also shows that there are now more than 6.7 million Australian homes and businesses who are able to connect to the NBN access network, compared with 5.0 million in May 2017.

The other victory that NBN Co is celebrating with its latest report is the decline in congestion, which was "reduced from more than five hours to less than 30 minutes per service, per week compared to this time last year".

"Our latest progress report shows in the past year we have also improved our ability to work with internet providers to restore faults on the network within our agreed timeframes by 30 percent".

NBN Co's chief customer officer, residential, Brad Whitcomb, said the company's work with industry is showing early signs of paying off.

NBN Co revealed plans in December previous year to introduce new product bundles combining access charges with some network connectivity virtual circuit (CVC) bandwidth capacity.

There are 91 per cent of homes and businesses who had their nbn™ equipment installed right the first time - compared with 86 per cent in May 2017.

The average congestion per service, per week, has actually increased to 18 minutes since February, when it was 12 minutes, and hasn't improved considerably since December-January.

There are 44 per cent of homes and businesses on a 50Mbps (download) wholesale speed plan or higher - compared with 16 per cent in May 2017. Just 0.089 percent of fixed-line customers have experienced network congestion, according to NBN.

The access network achieved 100 per cent availability during the month, excluding planned outages NBN said. The report also indicates that there are an average 1.00 per 100 homes and business who experienced a fault on the NBN access network in May 2018, compared to 1.0 in May 2017.
