South Korea pay the penalty against Sweden as VAR delivers again

  • Sweden and South Korea meet on Monday

South Korea's World Cup team responded to a Swedish spy for Sweden's team by swapping their jerseys so it would be harder to tell them apart.

Referee Joel Aguilar did not grant the penalty after a tackle by Kim Min-Woo on Viktor Claesson, but after the review and the decision, Granqvist finished into the lower right corner with Jo Hyeon-Woo diving the opposite way.

Granqvist stepped up and coolly slotted the ball away to cap-off a man of the match performance from the veteran defender, who made some essential last-ditch challenges in the first half to deny the Koreans.

With Sweden and South Korea both attempting to fight their way out of a competitive Group F headlined by the defending champions, Germany, and the red-hot Mexico team it lost, perhaps you can't blame either manager for trying to find any possible edge available to them.

Shin has been keeping secret his lineup against Sweden, using different lineups in each of their World Cup tuneups.

The South Korean coach's revelation came after Sweden's coach Janne Andersson expressed his apology following claims of a Swedish scout spying on the South Korean team's close-knit training session.

Swedish striker Marcus Berg had the best opportunity to break the deadlock from open play but side-footed the ball into the knee of South Korea goalkeeper Cho Hyun-woo from point blank range in the 21st minute.

Mikael Lustig picked out Claesson with an inviting cross on the stroke of half-time but his header was deflected wide.

South Korea, as expected, named Heung-Min Son and Hwang Hee-Chan to lead their attack, while captain Ki Sung-yueng competes at a third World Cup, starting in central midfield. A surprising choice to take the spot-kick, Granqvist coolly slotted into the bottom corner for his seventh global goal.

In a scrappy game, Cho also saved well from Ola Toivonen's header following a free-kick. Claesson goes over in the penalty box and Sweden are demanding a spot-kick!

Sweden had 15 shots, five on frame, while holding South Korea to zero shots on goal. There is always something we have to do to analyse the other team and we do what we can to win the match.

Next up for the Swedes is an intriguing encounter against Germany in Sochi on June 23.
