The latest quarterly findings from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) tracked cigarette smoking along with 14 other measures of health among USA adults.

As the report notes, even though cigarette smoking among US adults has been reduced by more than half since 1964, it still remains the leading preventable cause of disease and death in the country, taking the lives of more than 480,000 Americans each year with over 30 people living with a smoking-related disease for every person who dies a year. The campaigns included cigarette taxes, smoking bans in public places as well as educational drives.

As of Monday, the companies must note the potentially deadly consequences of smoking, as well as how tobacco companies have designed cigarettes to enhance the delivery of nicotine, making them more addictive.

Only 13.9 percent of American adults smoked cigarettes in 2017, down from 16 percent in 2016 and 20.8 percent in 2006.

"On the surface, I would say this is, of course, excellent news", said Robin Koval, CEO of the nonprofit anti-smoking Truth Initiative. According to the recent CDC report, smoking among American teens is down to 9 percent.

It was in 1964 that a report was released for the first time that connected several diseases as the direct effects of smoking.

Now, federal officials are grappling with a new challenge - how to regulate e-cigarettes.

For example, NY has the highest state tax on cigarettes, $4.35 per pack.

Juuling is the latest smoking craze to hit college campuses.

The rate of smoking used to be much higher. The companies must also describe five topics including the health risks, lack of any health benefits, and possible addictiveness to nicotine from smoking low-tar cigarettes. Cigarette sales and other indicators of smoking are also on the decline he said. The CDC adds that people in large metropolitan areas smoked significantly less than people who live in rural areas.

People living outside city centers also "had the highest rates of being obese, having experienced serious psychological distress during the past 30 days, or having diagnosed diabetes", said the report. They also were more likely to cite cost as a barrier to obtaining medical care.
