  • Ex-Cambridge Analytica boss admits getting Facebook data from researcher

Mr Nix on Wednesday said the consultancy had been given data by Kogan.

Investors backing a rebrand of the data consultancy firm are now in a stand-off with Nix while trying to persuade him to return the money, according to the Financial Times.

Cambridge Analytica data mining company has shut down amid a scandal over the personal information of about 50 million users it gathered from Facebook in order to allegedly influence some significant votes, including the 2016 US Presidential election and the Brexit referendum.

Nix said he thought he had been asked if Cambridge Analytica was still using the data.

Facebook said Kogan then violated its policies by passing the data to Cambridge Analytica.

Mr Nix claimed he and CA colleague Mark Turnbull had been "over-zealous" in trying to secure a contract from a potential client when they were filmed discussing how pretty Ukrainian women could be used to lure rival politicians into compromising positions.

Nix said that Channel 4 had heavily edited the footage to portray him in a worse light. "All Mr Nix's comments carried in our reports were used in context, including any caveats", the channel responded.

On other matters, Nix was less apologetic.

"At that stage we had deleted all of that data, but, on listening back to the transcript, it was clear I was asked whether we had ever been supplied with that data and my answer should have been yes", he said.

Christopher Wylie, the whistleblower who exposed the relations between Cambridge Analytica and the data firms was, he warned, spreading a damaging and misleading conspiracy theory.

Wrapping up the session, the chair of the committee, Damian Collins, told Nix: "A lot of the allegations against you have come from people who worked with you - not just Mr Wylie, but others too". "But you can't simply put forward your prejudices onto me and make sweeping assumptions about our involvement with a political campaign simply because that is what you want to believe because that narrative suits your view of the facts".

The executive at the heart of the Cambridge Analytica scandal rejected claims that he had spirited $8 million (Dh29.3 million) out of the operation in the weeks before its collapse as he revealed on Wednesday that the entire operations of the firm were being wound up.

Asked about a Guardian report that a Cambridge Analytica employee visited Wikileaks founder Julian Assange in the Ecuadorian embassy in 2017, he said he had been unaware of the meeting.
